Summer Research Internships

Summer research is a wonderful way to gain experience and professional development whether you are planning to apply for graduate school or other health professions programs. The University of Florida has multiple internship programs across several subjects. In addition to hands-on, independent research experience, internships will also provide you with scientific communication experience and professional development tools to approach writing applications and interviewing for post-graduate programs.

Summer Neurobiology Internship Program (SNIP)

The Summer (Neuroscience) Internship Program is a program that aims to support college students from a multitude of diverse backgrounds to pursue a Ph.D. in neuroscience and further research. SNIP 10-week paid research internship hosted by the Department of Neuroscience and UF’s Evelyn F. and William L. McKnight Brain Institute. SNIP interns are mentored by experienced neuroscientists and assigned independent research projects. Interns also attend weekly neuroscience research seminars and professional development workshops to prepare them for graduate school admissions, science writing and communication, and networking.

International Students: International students that are enrolled and currently studying at a U.S.-based university are eligible. International students must have a current, valid U.S. student visa.

Current UF Undergraduates:  UF undergraduate students will be provided the $5,000 stipend, but not housing. If already involved in research on campus, students can request to continue their project in their current lab, provided it is with researchers with the Neuroscience Department/MBI.

SNIP is Directed by Dr. Karina Alvina. If have any questions, email to SNIP@neuroscience.ufl.edu.

Summer Internship in Microbiology Research (SIMR)

The Summer Internship in Microbiology Research (SIMR) Program is a 10-week internship to support undergraduates from diverse backgrounds interested in pursuing a Ph.D. in infectious disease-related research (virology, bacteriology, parasitology, and immunology). Through the program, student interns will join infectious disease research labs at the University of Florida to carry out an independent research project under the mentorship of a UF graduate student, culminating in a symposium to present their research project. Scholars will also receive guidance on graduate admissions and career development from UF faculty, postdocs, and graduate student mentors and attend microbiology research seminars. Additionally, interns are offered housing and a $500 stipend per week. All students who are interested in a disease-related research career are encouraged to apply to the program, especially groups who are underrepresented in the sciences.

Who is eligible?

All college students interested in an infectious-disease focused career and at US-based universities that have not already been accepted into postgraduate programs can apply. Preference is given to students that will have completed their Junior year by the spring prior to the program and are interested in studying Microbiology in Graduate School.

Current UF Undergraduates, if students are already involved in research can request to continue research in their current lab provided studying infectious disease.

International Students, currently studying at a U.S based university, have a U.S student visa.

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF)

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship at The University of Florida is a 10-week research experience for those pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of Florida. In the program, students can work with a faculty adviser, senior Ph.D. student mentor, or Postdoc mentor. Additionally, in the program, students will engage in research and spend in-depth time furthering their path to a Ph.D. program at the University of Florida.

During the SURF program in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics students will perform basic research in Pharmacology and Therapeutics under the mentorship of one of the faculty, have discussions with Pharmacology faculty members and graduate students, and hear talks from guest speakers. Participants will also attend a four-day Pharmacology Immersion Program to acquire a general knowledge base in Pharmacology, provide hands-on experience with common laboratory methods, and facilitate engagement with primary faculty, graduate students, and postdocs in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • applicants must be full-time students registered at a College or University and must not be eligible for graduation prior to the beginning of the program
  • applicants must have completed at least one year of coursework at the undergraduate level with an overall grade point average of at least a 3.0
  • applicants must be able to devote 10 complete weeks of full-time laboratory research during the summer
