Cancer Research Conference for Science Teachers

The Cancer Research Conference focuses on bringing the most current knowledge in cancer research to Florida secondary science teachers. Teachers have the opportunity to connect with UF scientists, physicians, and trainees to dialogue about community health and well-being.

Objectives

Precollege Opportunities

The Cancer Research High School Symposium

The Cancer Research Symposium is hosted by the UF Cancer Center for local High School students. Students hear firsthand about the latest cancer research being done from UF faculty and trainees and hear about their varied career paths.

Objectives

  • Learn about cancer health risks and behavioral interventions for risk reduction.
  • Learn about new cancer treatment concepts, approaches, and data analyses.
  • Learn about various fields of cancer research and different career opportunities.

4-H University Program

The University of Florida Cancer Center participates in the Florida 4-H program each summer. Participants from the 4-H program attend hands-on Discovery Workshops to learn about cancer research and biology, from genetics to cellular changes. Students get first-hand experience in how researchers work in the lab by extracting DNA themselves!

Undergraduate Opportunities

UF Health Cancer Center University Scholars Program

Applications for the 2025 – 2026 program are now closed. Please keep an eye out for applications next year!

The University Scholars Program provides a fall-spring semester opportunity for UF undergraduates interested in cancer research. The program educates the next generation of professional on the importance of Biomedical research and scientific discovery through individual research projects and seminars. At the end of the program, scholars give an oral presentation on their research at a closing symposium.

Eligibility and Requirements

  • UF students in their freshman, sophomore, or junior year can apply (as long as you are not graduating before the following May).
  • Participants must dedicate 8-10 hours per week to research activities for the duration of the program.
  • Participation in monthly activities and the seminar series is required.
  • Participants must attend a 1 – 2 hour program orientation.
  • Selected participants may be eligible to receive a scholarship of up to $1,750.
