Gator Weekends in Science Explorations is back for Fall 2024 with three programs! This semester we will be looking at Global Health and Infectious Disease, Ecosystems and Biodiversity, and how Antibiotic Resistance affects Veterinary Medicine!
Dates:
October 26, Global Health and Infectious Diseases
Learn how scientists track, understand, and combat infectious diseases that impact communities worldwide. From learning about real time research to exploring the science and rationale behind pathogens, and public health strategies, this workshop offers an introduction to the role of biomedical science in improving global health outcomes. Engage in hands-on, authentic lab experiments and learn more about global health infectious disease and emerging pathogens from UF experts. This workshop is for you if you are interested in medicine, public health, or biology and this experience will deepen your understanding of the complex challenges and innovative solutions in fighting infectious diseases globally.
Suggested Grade Level: 10 – 12th grade students that have taken Biology, Biotechnology, Genetics, or Health Science classes.
November 9, Ecosystems and Biodiversity
Discover ecosystems and the impact of invasive species through hands-on lab experiences and discussion with UF experts. Explore how non-native species disrupt local habitats, threaten biodiversity, and affect the balance of ecosystems. Discover how scientists study and manage invasive species to protect our planet’s biodiversity. We’ll explore real-world examples, ecological principles, and the science behind conservation efforts. Come prepared to not just understand the science; but also, to appreciate the delicate balance of nature and recognize our role in preserving biodiversity.
Suggested Grade Level: 9th – 12th grade students that have taken Environmental or Biology classes.
November 25 & 26, 2024, Mini-Vet camp
Mini Vet Camp is designed for students interested in veterinary science. Participate in hands-on activities and interact with UF Vet School researchers and gain a practical understanding of animal care and health management. Explore the important topic of antibiotic resistance and its impact on both animal and human health. With a mix of lab work, discussions, and live demonstrations, this two-day nonresidential camp provides a brief introduction to the veterinary field and the challenges its professionals face today.
Suggested Grade Level: 10th – 12th grade students that have taken Biology, Zoology, Life, or Health science classes.
